A NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the tax identification number assigned to foreign individuals — required for shareholders, directors and representatives who are non-Spanish residents. A NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is the tax identification number assigned to legal entities — this is what the Spanish company itself receives upon incorporation. Both are needed for most banking, notarial and tax procedures. We apply for NIE and NIF numbers as part of our company formation and corporate support services.
A digital certificate is an encrypted electronic credential that allows a company — or its authorised representative — to interact with Spanish public authorities online. It is required to file tax returns, respond to notifications from the tax agency and Social Security, access the company’s electronic mailbox (DEHU) and complete many administrative procedures that cannot be done otherwise. Accompany is an authorised entity for the issuance of digital certificates and manages the process remotely, with validity of between two and five years for corporate certificates.
DEHU (Dirección Electrónica Habilitada Única) is the centralised electronic notification system used by Spanish authorities — including the tax agency, Social Security and other public bodies — to communicate with companies. Registration is mandatory for all Spanish companies. Notifications sent through DEHU are considered legally received even if unread, and failure to respond within the stated deadlines can result in fines, surcharges or enforcement actions. We register companies in DEHU, monitor incoming notifications daily and manage all responses on behalf of our clients.
It is possible in some cases, but Spanish banks apply strict due diligence requirements to foreign-owned companies, particularly those with non-resident shareholders or directors. The required documentation, the sequence of steps and the likelihood of remote approval vary significantly between banks.
