In this guide, we explain the main public incentives available in Spain: what they are, who can benefit, and what they can mean in practice for your business.

Public Incentives in Spain: An Overview

The public incentives framework in Spain is broad and designed to enhance business competitiveness from different angles. Public support covers initiatives across all sectors, with particular relevance for companies and professionals involved in:

  • Research, Development and Innovation (R&D&I)
  • Capital investment
  • Talent acquisition
  • Internationalisation

If your company is planning any of these initiatives, you may be entitled to public funding.

These incentives can take two main forms:

Non-repayable grants generate direct income in your P&L, reducing the cost of the initiative undertaken.

Subsidised financing provides access to very low-interest loans, helping you execute projects without relying exclusively on traditional bank lending.

These programmes are managed by different bodies — regional, national, European and international — depending on the type of project and the applicable regulations.

R&D&I Tax Credits

Research, Development and Technological Innovation are essential to business competitiveness. Investing in new products, services or processes represents a qualitative and quantitative step forward for any company — and Spanish regulation rewards that investment directly.

Any company, regardless of sector, carrying out R&D&I activities may benefit from a Corporate Income Tax deduction. This is a direct annual incentive reflected in lower tax payable.

The rates are as follows:

  • For R&D activities: the deduction can reach up to 42% of current expenditure, with additional deductions for full-time researchers (17%) and dedicated assets (8%).
  • For Technological Innovation activities: the deduction amounts to 12% of current expenditure.

This incentive applies across a wide range of industries — technology, manufacturing, engineering, life sciences, energy, automotive and many others. What matters is the nature of the activity and the ability to document it correctly.

Your Company is not paying Corporate Income Tax yet?

For companies carrying out R&D&I activities with no Corporate Income Tax liability, typically businesses in early growth stages that have not yet reached profitability, Spanish legislation provides an alternative mechanism.

Under this mechanism, the company can request payment of the annual deduction directly into its bank account, subject to the applicable legal conditions. In practical terms, this turns part of the tax incentive into a liquidity tool, particularly valuable for scaling companies, newly established ventures and innovation-led subsidiaries of international groups.

Eligibility depends not only on the nature of the activity, but on how the claim is structured and evidenced. Proper technical analysis and supporting documentation are essential.

Social Security Incentives for R&D Staff

Having highly qualified professionals dedicated exclusively to R&D&I represents a significant investment. Spanish regulation rewards these companies with a 40% reduction in employer Social Security contributions for qualifying researchers.

Unlike annual tax deductions, this benefit is immediate, it is reflected monthly and can directly reduce recurring employment costs. This makes it particularly relevant for companies building technical teams in Spain: engineers, scientists, developers or other professionals working full-time on innovation-related projects.

In addition, if your company holds the Innovative SME Seal, this benefit can be combined with R&D&I tax deductions, enhancing the overall value of the incentives package.

At ACCOMPANY, our payroll and HR administration team can help ensure these Social Security reductions are correctly applied and documented from day one.

The IP Box Regime

The IP Box regime is designed for companies whose business model is based on generating knowledge and subsequently licensing intangible assets to third parties in exchange for financial consideration.

Spanish regulation allows for a 60% reduction in the net income derived from licensing eligible intangible assets, effectively exempting that portion from Corporate Income Tax.

This can be especially relevant for R&D-intensive businesses that develop proprietary technologies, protected processes or other valuable intangible assets and monetise them through licensing arrangements. For international groups, Spain can be a particularly efficient location for developing, managing or exploiting eligible intellectual property under this regime.

This is a specialised area that requires careful legal and technical analysis. Our tax advisory team can help you assess whether your structure qualifies and support you through the process.
